The Georgia Mountains Workforce Investment Area 2 office receives its funding from federal funds that have been allocated to the State of Georgia. All customers must be determined suitable for WIA-funded services by a WIA staff member. Suitability is determined by examining some or all of the following items:
Length of training program
Financial aid award/denial
Household budget
Support system
Reliable transportation
Assessment scores/program choice
Current marketable skills
The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 provides funding for the following three groups:
Adults
Dislocated Workers
Youth
Adult- Must be 18 years of age or older, provide documentation to support the "right to work" as well as compliance with the Selective Service Act (if applicable). Depending on funding levels, a barrier to employment may also be required.
Dislocated Worker - Must provide documentation to support the "right to work" as well as compliance with the Selective Service Act (if applicable). Must meet one of the following definitions:
A. An individual who has been terminated or laid off, or who has received a notice of termination or layoff, from employment; is eligible for or has exhausted entitlement to unemployment compensation; or has been employed for a duration sufficient to demonstrate, to the appropriate entity at a one-stop center referred to in section 134 (c), attachment to the workforce, but is not eligible for unemployment compensation that were not covered under a State unemployment compensation law; and is unlikely to return to a previous industry or occupation;
B. An individual who has been terminated or laid off, or has received a notice of termination or layoff, from employment as a result of any permanent closure of, or any substantial layoff at, a plant, facility, or enterprise; is employed at a facility at which the employer has made a general announcement that such facility will close within 180 days; or for purposes of eligibility to receive services other than training services described in section 134 (d)(4), intensive services described in section 134 (d)(3), or supportive services, is employed at a facility at which the employer has made a general announcement that such facility will close;
C. An individual who was self-employed (including employment as a farmer, a rancher, or a fisherman), but is unemployed as a result of general economic conditions in the community in which the individual resides or because of natural disasters; or
D. An individual who is a displaced homemaker:
a. An individual who has been providing unpaid services to family members in the home, is unemployed or underemployed and is experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment, and b. Has been dependant either on public assistance and whose youngest child is within two years of losing eligibility; or c. Has been dependant on the income of another family member, but is no longer supported by that income.
Youth- Must be between the ages of 17-21, low-income individual or member of a low-income family and possess a barrier to employment.
